Hello friend,
A VC recently told me they won’t invest in any AI startup, even those showing explosive growth.
While I understand the caution around a hype-driven market with sometimes sky-high valuations, I was surprised.
“What about a startup that hits €1M ARR in just a few months?” I asked.
His answer stuck with me:
There’s a big difference between fast ARR and durable ARR.
In today’s AI gold rush, companies are trying every shiny new tool—often simultaneously.
Take developer tools: an enterprise might be paying for GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and a third code assistant… but hasn’t yet decided which one to keep.
Meanwhile, the barrier to entry has never been lower. Foundation models are commoditised, and tools like Copilot make it easy to clone products. Expect significant churn in the coming quarters.
So, what should AI startups focus on to build sustainable growth?
✅ Unique and high-quality data – Own your training sets.
✅ Deep enterprise integration – Become a pain to rip out.
✅ Verticalization – From infra to app, control the entire stack.
The winners won’t necessarily be the fastest—but the ones who become indispensable.
P.S.: Several CTOs and tech leaders have recently contacted me about my former Unicorn CTO live training program, so I might do a limited edition session in May. Click here to learn more about the program, or contact me directly if you’re interested.
